Lifestyle Medicine and Health Coaching

Lydia is a medical doctor, a board-certified lifestyle medicine physician, board-certified health and wellness coach and certified mindfulness teacher. She obtained her medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1994. She has post-graduate certificates in Integrative Medicine and Mindfulness-Based Interventions from the University of Stellenbosch.

She is a professional member of Health Coaches Australia New Zealand Association, founding board member of the South African Lifestyle Medicine Association and a member of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine.

Lydia has always been an advocate for the prevention, treatment and reversal of chronic ill-health by addressing the root cause with evidence-based lifestyle changes. This includes diet and physical activity as well as other lifestyle-related determinants of disease like sleep, stress and mental and emotional health. However, she also appreciates that developing and sustaining healthy habits is challenging and as a result uses a coaching approach to encourage and support her clients to explore and adopt new ways of living with greater confidence and ease.

Lifestyle Medicine

Lifestyle Medicine is a medical speciality that aims to prevent, treat or even reverse many chronic diseases with the strongest evidence-based modalities available. The six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine include:

  • A predominantly whole food plant-based diet
  • Regular physical activity
  • Adequate sleep
  • Stress management and emotional wellness
  • Positive psychology and connectedness
  • Smoking cessation and avoiding other risky substance use

Health Coaching

Health coaching is a growing field built around the latest science on motivation and behavioural change.

A healthy lifestyle can have the greatest impact on the prevention, treatment and in some cases, the reversal of the following conditions:

  • Prediabetes and metabolic syndrome
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Unhealthy weight

Lydia incorporates her three passions – lifestyle medicine, health coaching and mindfulness – into supporting her clients to achieve their health goals.  She helps her clients overcome chronic physical and mental health challenges through a process that includes healthy lifestyle education, the development of self-awareness and self-compassion, and the skills to create sustainable health habits, so they can reclaim their vitality, energy and joy in living.
